This handsome Bracket Clock was made by Winterhalder Hofmier who were considered to be one of the very best German clock makers of their time for the famous Philadelphia jewelry store J.E CALDWELL & SONS. In the late 1880's.
The case is in the Portico or Architectural style which was quite popular in the 1890's. It's case
Has the original finish and is of mahogany veneer called tiger mahogany. Note the full columns on each side of the case, they add a very pleasing touch to this large clock. There is a minor amount of wear and discoloration in a few places which do not distract from the beauty of this clock. It is quite common for clocks imported from Europe to have this situation.
The brass dial was hand engraved with the Caldwell name, a beautiful design, and then Silvered. This dial also has both fast/slow and silent hands.
The movement has the W&H & Son trademark engraving.
This clock has an 8 day "Ting-Tang" pendulum movement, which strikes the quarters on two gongs and on the hour it strikes each hour on just one gong. The gongs are very mellow and resonate beautifully for a very long time, it sounds just divine. It has been fully overhauled by T.P. Wittmann certified Horologist.
